Earthquake Lake was formed when a massive earthquake rocked the Yellowstone area in 1959. The quake measured 7.3 on the Richter Scale and caused some 80 million tons of rock to slide off the mountainside. The landslide dammed up the Madison River and the lake formed in a few days time. 28 campers lost their lives along the Madison that night. This serene landscape barely resembles the not so distant past. The hundreds of dead pine trees only hint at the violent history here.
